Hey all! My friend Leo Dasso (:iconmisterlion:) is making a totally bad-ass game with its graphics drawn entirely with ballpoint pen on college-ruled paper. He needs enough support for it to become real, so if you think it's a cool idea that needs to happen please help out! Basically, the way it works is that you get to pledge the amount you want to, and that amount will go to the project if we manage to help him reach his goal of $6000. (If that doesn't happen by April 7, you won't get charged for your pledge.)

Be sure to check out the link and if you think it's as awesome as I do, spread the word in support of this starving independent artist! 8D

APE 2011

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 29, 2011, 2:06 PM
Hey, everyone! I'll be at APE this weekend with my sister, along with :iconemersontung:, :iconandrewmar: and :iconmisterlion:. Come visit us at table #276 and #277! We'll be selling prints and our book, Chromagination. There will be free postcards to be gotten!

Here's a map for the quickest route to our tables:
[link] :D

I'm so sorry for being really inactive, real life's been pretty crazy! I do update my blog pretty regularly though, so if you're curious to know what I've been up to, do drop by!

Fanime is in 2 days and I'm not fully prepared yet! I'm (crazy) anxious because paper cutter hasn't arrived for me to trim my prints and my bookmarks aren't here yet. In just a few hours, I will be going into panic if everything doesn't magically work out by then.

So, who is going? I'm excited to meet some of you guys! :D I'll be having a table this year -my first in the US- with my sister and I'll be selling my prints and some bookmarks if they arrive on time. Please drop by to say hi and don't be shy to talk to me or ask me anything. There will be free business cards to be gotten () and if you stroke my ego long and hard enough, you might even get some free prints out of me. No, just tell me you stalk me on dA or that my stuff's so beautiful they make you cry your eyeballs out. Or that you love me forever.

We still don't know our table number yet, but look out for our banner: [link]

Oh and if you're wondering why you're never seen my sister's work before, it's because she's an idiot. Go to her page and bug her to update: ~irysching

5:09am, Thursday, May 27, 2010 [UPDATE]

Still cutting prints. Paper cutter came but proved to be highly ineffective and frustrating to use. So it's back to the regular blade and cutting mat. I think I must have spent 6 hours cutting, punching and attaching tassels to my bookmarks. There's not much time left! *panics*

Fanime wrote to us, and we got our table number! Catch us at T255.

How's everyone doing? :D I finally set aside some time to write about what art school's been like for me, and it's up on Zero 2 Illo! You can read it here: [link] If you like what I wrote or if there's anything you're curious to know, please leave a reply to the post. It would make Jon and I very happy to read them.

My sister and I will be sharing a table at FanimeCon this year and we don't have any experience on setting up our tables! I had my first table at Comic Fiesta last year and I simply put my prints on the table for display. It was fine because Comic Fiesta is rather small compared to Fanime but I'm looking for ways to display my prints for more visibility. I've seen how the tables are set up at cons (example: [link], but I've no idea where to purchase these things or even what they're called (pipes? ). If anyone's willing to help me out or point me in the right direction, I promise to love you forever.

Also, I've been really slow at replying to comments these days and I sincerely apologize. It doesn't mean that I don't love you all! I'm just failing miserably at juggling my schoolwork, etc.

Sorry for the lack of updates, my dear watchers! I'm back at art school, and I'm DYING. I must be fantastic at managing my time because everyone in my class comes in on time and noone looks like a freaking zombie. Me, I'm always late for class and I always look like I powdered my face with charcoal and then soaked it into a pail of bleach the night before. I don't sleep for days in a row and then sleep for 20 hours straight during my 'off days'. This cannot be healthy! I wonder why I do this to myself. I mean, I've already been through art school once! :cries:

Oh, and I got interviewed by Jon Woodward! You can read it here if you're interested at all: [link] I will be putting up some of my work done at school on Jon's website every other month, and the first update will most likely be up at the end of this month. Jon's awesome for giving me a chance to do this, so please leave a comment if you liked the interview. :D

The DD was definitely a pleasant surprise. Thank you to ^rydi1689 for suggesting and to `dapper-owl for the feature! I tried replying to every single comment left, and I hope I hadn't missed out any. You're all awesome people!

Comic Fiesta 2009! [After Event Update]

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 20, 2009, 7:33 AM
I will be sharing a table with a friend at this year's Comic Fiesta. If you're in Malaysia, do drop by so that we can bump shoulders and stuff. :XD: Be warned though, I'm kinda awkward and socially inept but I'm always happy to meet new people. In fact, once I start talking I usually can't stop.

Booth name: JimJamJum (D2-4)
Convention Map: [link] (that's us in pink!)
Date: 19 & 20 December 2009
Venue: Sunway Pyramid Convention Center
Walk-in tickets: RM15/day

I'll be selling prints and badges and I'm super super excited!

:bulletyellow:EDIT after Day 1:
First time ever having a table in my life. Thank you so so so much to everyone who dropped by at my table! You guys totally made my day. Totally. I squeal in nervous delight (like a silly schoolgirl) once I'm out of your cone of vision. For every signature that I was asked to give, I felt like a star. It matters so much to me that you find value in my work. THANK YOUUUUU.

Thank you so much to :iconh0taru: who made me an absolutely adorable sock plushie! I love the thing to bits. And thank you also to my booth partner, :iconamaechan: and also :iconnaga-shesh:, who both helped me out a whole lot! :D

:bulletyellow:EDIT after Day 2:
Today was even more EPIC than Day 1. A few people wanted my entire set of prints, and I'm really really grateful for all the support! :iconkidchan: was so sweet to come over to give me a print of hers. And with a short message written at the back of it too! THANK YOU, KIDDDD (I really hope you like my print too T^T). I got to hang out with a student of mine (fun fun fun), and my instructor from art school dropped by to get some of my prints. :D There was a guy who believed that my paintings were photo-manipulations. I told him otherwise, but he just looked at me and went on to say that some parts of my paintings looked like photos. I didn't know what to say other than, "Well, it's not." Obviously unconvinced, he stared hard at my prints for a while, put them down, and then left without saying a word. Um, wow. O-kay. I have no idea what to make of this.

There's one thing I'm really embarrassed to bring up. I sold a defective print by accident! If anyone has a damaged print (slightly dented) of , with a tiny 'D' written at the corner on the back of the print, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I will send a signed replacement to you by mail, at my cost. I'm SOOOOO SORRY. I didn't realize that I had sold it until I couldn't find it anywhere. :onfire:

:bulletyellow:Note to all who dropped by:

There's a feature of my work in this month's ImagineFX issue! :D

Thank you to the kind Jon Woodward for the scan.

I'm still in San Francisco. The initial plan was to return to Malaysia in August, but I changed my mind a day before my flight. I really like it here! I'll be going back to my country in 20 days, but I'm thinking of returning for MFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art. There are so many factors to consider though. It'd be awesome if I can eventually lead a life here in the future... but I will miss my family, and I know that they'll be reluctant to let go of their daughter too. There's also the expenses to think about. But I can see myself being a lot happier here. I feel like I belong already. Where I come from, artists are generally disrespected and misunderstood. Try telling a Malaysian that you're an artist, and watch them fumble for polite words to say. They think of artists as people who are less intelligent and are only good with pictures. And the art industry in Malaysia? Pretty much non-existent.

So how's everyone doing?

Fanime 2009

Journal Entry: Wed May 27, 2009, 3:06 AM
Fanime was awesome! I got to meet lots of people and some other artists on DA I wasn't expecting to be there. I'm kinda shy and was really scared to approach people at first, but I'm happy that I somehow managed to force myself to do it. :iconethe: was the first person I found, and she's a very sweet and friendly girl. I kinda forgot to ask her to sign the prints she gave me though. :faint: (And thank you for the fries, girl!) She introduced me to :iconderlaine8: who's also from Malaysia. :D I also got to meet :iconlilythescorpio: (thank you for those cute little stickers!), :iconpoftd: who was very nice to me and gave me a print and her very cute and excitable friend :iconeromenos:. :iconarvalis: was there too.

I also met :iconpuimun:, :iconwen-m:, :iconazuzephre:, and :iconmuhoho-seijin:, and managed to force them to accept some of my prints. :blushes:

I was sad that I didn't manage to find :iconleaunoire: and :iconquinkee: though. :cries:

I took lots of pictures, but I'm too lazy to upload them all so here's one. I'm the one on the right with the newspaper scarf. (I'm not sure if the artist would like me putting her picture up, so I won't be telling you who she is. But isn't she adorable? )

Random Fanime experience: I went to the video room where they screened hentai after midnight, and found out that hentai is very similar to bad comedy.

Fanime 2009 & San Francisco

If you catch me at the convention while I still have some, I'll let you have 2 or 3 randomly selected pieces for free. :D A trade would be nice too. And OMG, I'll be flying in some hours. AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

***

Hi everyone! I'll be flying to San Francisco in a few days to live there with my sister for 3 months and I will be attending Fanime 2009.

I've never been to a convention other than Comic Fiesta before, so I have no idea what it's like. I hope to meet some deviants there, but I don't know how since I'm not selling. Any ideas? If you have a table, I can probably drop by.

I'm trying to get some of my stuff made into small prints before I fly, so if you want to meet up please let me know which of my work you'd like printed. So that I can shove some in your face. For free, of course. :D

The cost of change.

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 28, 2009, 1:32 PM
Someone posted this on total_health and I had to share. It totally snapped me out of my rut.

Count the cost. It costs you not to change. It costs you to stay the same. Until you can see the pain before you in black and white terms, you will not understand how much you are selling yourself short by keeping things the way they are. Get alone, with a pen and paper, or with your laptop, and list at least 10 ways that you are causing yourself pain by staying the way you are. Take some time to feel the pain: then say good bye to it!

Podcasts and things. [Updated -again-]

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 21, 2009, 12:38 PM
Some podcasts (and videocasts) have literally change my life forever. I love listening to them when I paint and it always amazes me how both sides of the brain are able to do this without really fighting for attention. These podcasts are usually quite motivating, so they keep me painting very spiritedly. Some aren't as 'life-changing' as others, but even so they're usually filled with lots of useful information - insights and experiences. I'm going to link to some that I listen to. Please help me expand the list! If you like them, please let me know. :D

The hosts, Dwight and Swain, are very fun people! There's a very longggg list of Sidebar episodes, but here are some highlights.

:bulletyellow:Bobby Chiu's YouTube Videos</a>
Though not strictly podcasts, Bobby's videos have made a huge impact on my life. He made me realize what I really wanted to do with my life, and I got the term 'independent artist' from him. He does pause quite often and sometimes speak a little slowly in the videos, but I think that's because he's painting and trying to figure out what to say at the same time.

And more!

I've been addicted to Twitter lately. This can't be good. D:
  • Mood: Sweet
  • Listening to: EntropySong - Dane Jacobs & Megan McKenzie
  • Eating: peanut butter and chocolate
  • Drinking: dry gin
So I made a poll lately and discovered that out of the 1200+ over people who watch me, 217 are active. 217 isn't a bad number though; sometimes it's nice to have a small audience.

I really want to get to know everyone here a little more. So tell me, what is your dream? This means your ultimate goal in life, whether as an artist or as a person. Something that when achieved, will make you feel wholly proud of yourself.

I'll go first.

***

I had my moment of clarity only a few months back. When I started taking up some freelance projects (mostly concept art) after graduating from art school last year, I realized that this really isn't what I really wanted to do. I guess I was living someone else's dream. I always thought that I was going to be a concept artist when I was in art school, but I became extremely frustrated with the lack of flexibility and room for my own interpretation when it came to doing these jobs. Even if I technically did a good job, I never felt that those paintings or drawings truly belonged to me. I wanted to convey my own feelings, tell my own stories and I wanted people to be able to learn something about me and my thoughts through my paintings.

The idea of "fame" fame does not excite me, but I do want my work to reach as many people as possible. My dream, is to be able to speak through my work, and to be known for my character and spirit through my art. And hopefully be able to make a living doing this. An independent artist, as Bobby Chiu calls it.

I'm still struggling, still living off my parents' money and I'm turning 23 this year. But I think I'm heading in the right direction, being the kind of artist I want to be.

***

There. I hope I didn't write too much. It's your turn, dear watchers and friends!

Reasons why I'm doing this:
1. I HAZ NO LYF.
2. I HAZ NO FWENS.
3. I think this is something that every artist or person should really think about. So many of us are sleep-walking through our lives, doing things that don't make actual sense. Come on, we all deserve to realize our dreams. And don't be shy about it, it can be anything- a good wife, janitor, art teacher, pinup artist, Picasso... etc.

It's 7.30AM and I haven't gone to bed! When I get up later I'll respond to every single reply. Promise.
